Okay Readers, this week has been (and continues to be) CrAzY! Here we are smack dab in the middle of tech-week for the show "Into The Woods" that is opening this Friday and I'm just running circles around myself to try and keep up! I scored this Sputnik light fixture Tuesday afternoon, I traded two smaller light fixtures I ahd laying around for it, so it was basically free! It's not in the best shape, at some point is was wired to be a wall plug in lamp, and one of the sockets is busted, however it does light up and work so for free it will do!
I found this little gem at a well picked over Goodwill, I have no idea what year its from, but i'd guess the 50's - 60's like the box says its a cookie gun. I took a chance with this because the people at Goodwill had the box taped up tighter than Fort Knox, but at $1.99 I thought it was worth a shot...
This must have been a wedding gift, or impulse buy because I don't believe its ever been used or taken out of the box!
I cannot believe that not ONLY were all the pieces in the box, but how shiny and new they were. Like I said I don't think it was ever used! And in the Original Box!
Well that's the News for this week, I'm back being grounded working at the Theatre until the show opens Friday night! I'll have a set post soon to follow.
Well Readers,
I suppose my goal of blogging three times a week is shot... But I do have lots to report!
This week March 20th The First day of Spring My Grandmother Jordan "Miss Daisy" turned 90 years old! To celebrate Dad took Grandma out for a Birthday Dinner and we tagged along!
(Patricia, Mable, Zack, Grandma & Dad)
As a surprise Dad sent her 90 red roses for her birthday! I presented her with a "china doll" plant, and sent her the pink gladiola arrangement in the back, Grandma loves flowers! I know I've said it numerous times here on the blog, but I love my Grandma dearly, we seem to understand one another and get into all kinds of trouble on our Wednesday beauty shop trips. Shes got a lot of spunk left in her and love every minuet of our time and treasures we share!
(Michelle, Me & Patricia)
Speaking of Wednesday trips, this Wednesday Patricia and I headed out on a day trip to Denton/Decatur Texas for some thrifting and dinner with good friend Michelle! Michelle is busy getting things ready for her July wedding later this year, so Patricia and I hit up Denton for some goodies.
(Our Kills, finds!)
Lots of goodies! I found a Pink Pyrex 213 loaf pan, Patricia scored this 933 Orange long pan with a carrier for $11.00 (Our second piece of Orange "Halloween" Pyrex!) I also picked up a matching "Golden Foliage" Libbey glass that matches our set (I plan to keep swizzle sticks in it.) Lastly we found the sheet music for "On A Slow Boat to China" for $1.00 after our wallets were thrifted out we headed back to Decatur to meet up with Michelle for dinner at one of our favorite spots-
(Yesterdays Texas)
You can make ANY joke you want about this place being overly kitschy, but let me tell you- this place has some of the best food out there.
(Exhibit A)
Being a Texan, and a Texan who lives mostly in the "country" (were not exactly your Ponderosa Ranch) I can tell you all about Chicken Fried Steak. Now before you start your "Duke Boy's Yee-Hawing" I can honestly say that this is the BEST DAMN Chicken Fried Steak in North Texas! If you're ever passing through I highly recommend stopping in and treating yourself to this, or a burger or just about anything on their menu, even now as I type my mouth starts to water.
If you've been keeping up with the events here on "Mick's" You'll know that last Friday Night was our annual Spring Break Dance! If you will recall last years formal dance, we had quite a turn out and a fabulous time. This year's dance- not to be out done boasted a guest list of 51 people in attendance, with even more gowns and tux's!
(Don't we all look great?!)
(A "white sport coat" and my date Patricia)
This year everyone dressed up in period 1950's formals the girls hunted for MONTHS to find the perfect dresses. Our "Prom Planning Committee" researched for hours trying to find perfect 1950's-esk decorations so our "Prom" would be authentic!
("If Dreams Came True"- our Prom song/Theme by Pat Boone)
In no time at all the party was hopping! It took nearly 45 minuets to get everyone signed in at the Lake Diversion toll gate, but things were underway after a Blessing was given by Mr. Schaffer.
It wasn't long before the records started spinning and "The Casablanca Class of 1958" was dancing up a storm!
(Look at Friend Evelyn Go!)
We Hokey Pokey'd and discovered that it really is what it's all about and then took the group photos-
(The Ladies...)
(The Gents...)
The Records played on with the latest hits of the day and everyone was having a terrific time!
(Friends- Chloe, Kelcie, Courtney, Felicity, and Joy!)
(Savannah, Myself, Brianna, Emily & Chloe!)
(Everyone chatting out on the terrace of the dance pavilion.)
At long last a record finally made its way to the top of the pile we'd all been waiting for, it's the latest dance craze sensation! "The Bunny Hop!"
Earlier this week on a blog called The Speedboys (blogging from Spain!) featured a whole post about the Bunny Hop and once I posted it on our Facebook event page we KNEW it would be a hit at the dance!
(Friend Melissa, dressed as Marylin Monroe leads the Bunny Hop!)
We Bunny Hopped, Limbo'd and Cha-Cha-Cha'ed the night away! Readers I was just tickled pink and turquoise at our turn out it was everything we'd been dreaming about for months and months!
(Myself & Lisa head of Costuming at the Theatre)
(Patricia and J.T.)
(Amanda and Braxton are 'going steady')
It was about this time in the evening we drug out the limbo stick (a Casablanca party tradition!) to see how low everyone could go!
(Here I go!)
(Miss Margaret!)
(Make it Meg!)
(Our Limbo Winners, Heather, Margaret & Meg!)
With the Limbo title tucked away, and all the votes in Miss Casablanca (Kelcie- Master of Ceremonies) prepared to announce just WHO would be in 1958 Prom Queen!
And our 1958 Prom King & Queen are...
(Francis and Olivia!)
Everyone clapped and cheered (We based the prom queen votes off of best girls costume, and the queen got to pick her king!) and then the King and Queen lead the Prom Court in a dance...
"Queen of the Senior Prom - The Mills Brothers"
(Aren't they sweet?)
Next Dance up was "The Stroll"
(Me and Patricia)
(Francis, Caitlin & Kelcie)
(James & Joy!)
(Michael & Disa)
(Patricia & Russ share a dance.)
The dancing portion of our evening was finishing up in fine form, everyone picked their partners for the "school dance" "If Dreams Came True" and while dancing cheek to cheek I saw the Magic of Prom that so often one hears about. Ya know the kind you dream about only to discover its a stuffy evening in ill fitting formal wear. But this friends was the real deal, everyone looked so sharp in their suits and gowns- some sporting corsages others boutonnieres. All I can say for our 1958 dance is that dreams really did come true!
* * *
Immediately following the dance the guests headed up to the Casablanca for the first Drive-In picture show of the year. This years opening feature being a movie called "That's what I am."-
As the credits flickered across the screen and our friends departed one by one a magnificent evening was drawing to a close.
(Friends- Russ & Chloe)
This picture reminds me of Norman Rockwell's "The Morning After, New Year's Eve at the Waldorf Astoria". The Spring Break Dance is always an indicator as to how the rest of the Casablanca's Social Season is going to go, and with any luck this year will be one for the record books! I'd like to give special thanks to our "Prom Committee" Patricia, Joe, Cheryl (who also costumed most of the guests), Melissa, Meg, and Terrace! As well as a special thanks to everyone who brought food for the party, (a very special thanks to Mr & Mrs Adams for making a pot roast, along with a ham and many other delights!) and last but not least a HUGE thank you to all of our friends for making the night a smashing success!
New Friends, Old Friends, Family, (including some family that just stalks and criticizes.) But you are all here. What a fun ride it's been and what a great time I've had getting to know you all!
So to celebrate here are a few highlight reels of "Everyone Goes to Mick's"!
Its been so great being able to share with all of you the fun we have at the Casablanca, as so many people tell me "Always a party at Mick's". I hope someday each and everyone of you readers might join us for an evening of entertainment at the Casablanca. You've watched right before your very eyes as an old worn out shack has been transformed into a special place where dreams often do come true for its members, thank you for following and being Friends!
