Forgive Me Mr Eames...

Well dear Readers I did it....
May the Retro God's strike me dead, but I painted this awesome chair... I thought about leaving it, but the discoloring was just to ugly (even after i polished it out) See yesterday I learned 2 important things 1) Never post on a national holiday (people wont read) 2) Use bigger cardboard when one spray paints indoors.  First I wrote down the patten # D-1 92029 (made in the USA' then put masking tape over the legs...

At this point I stopped and Googled the patten number JUST to make sure it wasn't a real  Eames chair, when nothing came up I didn't feel quite so bad....then I also hit the legs a lick with some steel wool. Now before you people lay in on me "YOUR A MONSTER! YOU COULD HAVE LEFT THE CHAIR TURQUOISE!" I tried, I sanded, a polished, I rubbed, and the discoloring wouldn't come off.  When ever I fix something for the lake, I think the same way the set dresser for the show "Mad Men" thinks... "Yes its great its from the period but not so much its got 50 years of ware and tear sometimes the prop needs to look brand new" and that's how I pick and choose my refurbishing battles at the Casablanca.
After the tape was on I went out to my dads shop to paint (because our 4th of July consisted of POURING rain...) I laid down some card board, and painted the bottom first, then turned it over and painted the front side.

(Not to bad looking for a $12 chair and a $3 can of paint)
I have to get some feet caps for it but other than that here is the finished project! Its gonna look great in the Turquoise room out at the Casablanca, which is is getting way to Atomic for its own good.  The only problem I encountered was the piece of card board I used was NOT big enough and when I lifted it up there was a perfect rectangle  painted on the shop floor, so I threw some naphtha on it and tried to scrub it up... its still there just barely but not so noticeable but all is well now!

Hope you had a happy 4th!

It looks fab , Mick. Discoloration doesn't look right, no matter how cool the shape of the chair. Looks brand new!

The chair looks great! I think that you definitely did the right thing. Just because something is vintage doesn't mean that it's still attractive. Sometimes things just need a little reviving - and that sleek new paint job might just help the chair to live on for another fifty years - and that is a gift of good design that just keeps giving!
